Improve City Car Mileage Without Harmful Shortcuts
Reduce avoidable fuel use with smoother driving, correct tyres and proper maintenance.
Improve city mileage by reducing unnecessary acceleration and braking, maintaining the car correctly and measuring consumption consistently. There is no safe universal trick that guarantees a fixed percentage gain. Follow the owner's manual, keep traffic safety first and investigate sudden unexplained deterioration instead of hiding it with driving changes.
Measure before diagnosing a problem
Use several normal full-tank intervals rather than a single dashboard reading. Record distance and fuel added using a consistent filling method permitted by the vehicle's instructions. Do not repeatedly top up after the recommended stop point or create a spill to obtain an artificial measurement.
Mileage equals kilometres travelled divided by litres used. If a hypothetical car covers 420 km between comparable fills and takes 30 litres, the calculated result is 14 km/l. These are illustrative values, not a model's expected economy.
Record route, trip length, traffic, passenger load and air-conditioning use. Look for a persistent change under similar conditions before assuming a mechanical fault or the success of an accessory.
Drive to avoid wasting energy
Look farther ahead and ease off early when traffic slows, while maintaining a safe following distance. Repeated hard acceleration followed by braking spends fuel without improving average progress.
Use the appropriate gear and engine operating range. Avoid labouring the engine in an unsuitable high gear merely because its speed looks low. For an automatic, follow the manufacturer's guidance for traffic, slopes and stopping; there is no universal instruction to keep switching between drive and neutral.
Do not coast downhill with the engine off or in neutral as a fuel-saving technique. Maintain the control and braking arrangements prescribed for the car. Never tailgate a larger vehicle for supposed aerodynamic savings or sacrifice safe merging speed to protect a dashboard figure.
Keep tyres and maintenance correct
Maruti Suzuki's car-care guidance covers tyre condition, pressure and preventive maintenance. Use the pressure specified for your car, load and tyre fitment, usually checked cold as directed. The maximum pressure moulded on a tyre is not a universal target for your vehicle.
Underinflation can increase rolling resistance and cause wear; overinflation beyond the prescribed setting is not a sensible economy shortcut. Check for damage, uneven wear and a recurring pressure loss. If the car pulls or tyres wear irregularly, have the cause assessed rather than assuming alignment alone explains everything.
Follow the correct oil specification and service schedule. An unapproved thinner oil or additive is not an evidence-based improvement. Ask a qualified workshop to investigate warning lights, rough running, brake drag or a sudden sustained consumption increase.
Reduce stationary and accessory waste sensibly
Avoid unnecessary extended idling when it is safe and lawful to do so, following the owner's instructions. If the car has an automatic stop-start system, understand its operation rather than overriding it based on hearsay. Do not switch off where restarting, visibility or traffic control could be compromised.
Plan errands to reduce repeated cold starts and unnecessary distance where practical. Remove unused roof carriers or heavy items if they serve no current purpose, while keeping required tools and safety equipment. Roof loads also need proper securement and compliance with the vehicle's limits.
Use air conditioning as needed for comfort, visibility and alertness. Turning it off to the point that windows mist or the driver becomes uncomfortable is a poor trade. Ventilate a hot cabin sensibly and avoid presenting an unmeasured AC-on versus AC-off percentage as a guaranteed saving.
Convert small gains into realistic money
Assume, hypothetically, monthly travel is 1,000 km and petrol costs ₹100/litre. Improving from 12 to 13 km/l reduces use from 83.33 to 76.92 litres, saving about ₹641 per month. That is useful, but not a reason to buy an expensive unverified fuel-saving device.
If an accessory costs ₹12,000 and the claimed benefit has not been independently demonstrated on your car, there is no sound payback calculation. Testimonials and a temporary dashboard change do not establish causation. Compare money spent with credible evidence, warranty implications and the manufacturer's approval.
Maintain a simple monthly log and review consistent trends. Accept that severe traffic, very short trips and weather can limit results even with good habits. The goal is lower avoidable waste and reliable operation, not beating a certification number at the expense of safety.
Quick questions, clear answers
Should I overinflate tyres to improve mileage?
Use the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure for the actual load and fitment. Excess pressure is not a safe substitute for maintenance or smooth driving. If you cannot find the specification, consult the correct manual or authorised support rather than copying another model's setting.
Does a fuel additive guarantee better economy?
No guarantee is established here. Check manufacturer approval, compatibility and credible controlled evidence before spending money. A before-and-after dashboard reading over different routes cannot isolate the additive's effect, and an unsupported product may create costs rather than savings.
When should poor mileage be inspected?
Seek assessment when a persistent unexplained change accompanies warning lights, rough running, unusual heat, smells, tyre problems or other symptoms. Compare similar trips first, but do not ignore a safety-related symptom while collecting more mileage data. Follow the manual's warning guidance.
