Mahindra Thar vs Maruti Suzuki Jimny: Choose the Right 4x4

Compare door access, powertrain choices, 4WD use and practical ownership trade-offs.

Illustrative guide to Thar vs Jimny
Proposed original explanatory illustration for Mahindra Thar vs Maruti Suzuki Jimny: Choose the Right 4x4; label any vehicle illustration as illustrative.

For this comparison, define Thar as the three-door vehicle and compare an actual 4WD variant with the Indian five-door Jimny. Jimny's rear doors favour frequent rear-passenger access; Thar offers a broader documented petrol/diesel powertrain choice. Neither is automatically the better vehicle for every Indian road, and current Thar OG specifications need model-year matching.

Three doors versus five changes everyday use

The Mahindra three-door brochure identifies the body used here. Maruti Suzuki's official Jimny launch filing identifies its Indian five-door configuration and body-on-frame design. Do not accidentally compare the Jimny with the separately named Thar ROXX.

Rear doors make the Jimny the more direct candidate when passengers enter the back frequently. That is an access advantage, not proof of superior rear-seat comfort. Ask the intended passengers to try both; a three-door configuration requires a different entry movement and can be inconvenient for someone with restricted mobility.

Inspect luggage space with all required seats in use. A rear seat folded in a photograph cannot demonstrate luggage room for four travellers. Check the tailgate opening and available space behind the vehicle in your parking bay.

Powertrain and gearbox choices are different

The inspected Thar brochure describes petrol and diesel engine families with six-speed manual and automatic options, depending on variant. The Jimny product page distinguishes five-speed manual and four-speed automatic families. Gear count alone does not establish refinement, economy or off-road control.

If diesel is essential, the documented Thar range provides a reason to investigate the appropriate version; do not assume the Jimny offers an equivalent diesel. If rear-seat access matters more than that fuel preference, Jimny's five-door layout deserves priority in the test-drive shortlist.

Mahindra's current portfolio also uses Thar OG naming. The previously published brochure cannot establish that every detail carries over unchanged. Confirm the actual production-year engine, gearbox, suspension and equipment before adding specifications or accepting a quote.

Understand what the 4WD system can do

The Jimny filing describes ALLGRIP PRO four-wheel drive. The Thar brochure describes a transfer case with low ratio on relevant 4WD versions, while its equipment table distinguishes variants. A two-wheel-drive Thar should not be presented as equivalent merely because the model badge looks the same.

Low-range gearing helps controlled progress in suitable conditions, but selecting it is not a substitute for training. Follow the correct manual for surfaces, speeds and mode changes. Part-time four-wheel-drive systems have operating restrictions; do not assume a mode intended for loose surfaces belongs on dry high-grip roads.

For ordinary broken tarmac, assess comfort, tyre suitability and clearance rather than buying capability from appearance. Neither ground clearance nor a brochure's promotional water image is permission to enter uncertain floodwater. Water depth, current and hidden road damage make that a separate hazard.

Budget for the use you will really make

Suppose a hypothetical 4WD version costs ₹2 lakh more than another suitable vehicle. If you take ten recreational trips annually over five years, the initial premium alone is ₹4,000 per trip, before fuel, tyres, recovery equipment or finance. This is not a Thar/Jimny price comparison.

The arithmetic helps distinguish a valued hobby from a supposed financial necessity. Spending on training and suitable equipment may be more useful than cosmetic accessories. Avoid modifications whose load, legality, warranty implications or effect on handling have not been checked.

Compare tyre replacement prices, insurance terms and local service access for the exact versions. A rare off-road trip does not establish a need for the largest available wheel or an aggressive tyre that compromises the road behaviour you need daily.

Make the shortlist conditional and specific

Start with Jimny if rear passengers need their own doors and you want the documented petrol/manual-or-automatic package. Start with a verified 4WD Thar if its available diesel or other matched powertrain is central and the three-door access compromise is acceptable. These are supported shortlist directions, not measured off-road rankings.

Drive both on legal roads and use supervised off-road demonstrations only in appropriate places. Review the allotted car's drivetrain, tyres and recovery provisions before paying. Obtain current safety-report applicability and do not transfer a rating across body styles or generations.

Quick questions, clear answers

Is every Thar a four-wheel-drive vehicle?

No assumption should be made from the badge. The inspected brochure distinguishes drivetrain-dependent equipment, and the exact ordered variant must be checked. If 4WD is the reason for buying, have the transfer-case functions and operating instructions demonstrated before delivery.

Does five-door mean five comfortable adults?

Door count describes access, not guaranteed passenger capacity or comfort. Check the stated seating capacity and each restraint position in the correct brochure. Sit the intended occupants inside and evaluate luggage and payload together rather than inferring suitability from the number of doors.

Which is better for long highway trips?

This guide establishes no tested highway winner. Assess seating, noise, legal-speed stability, luggage and fuel stops in the actual variants. Include the needs of rear passengers and consider whether a more road-focused vehicle would serve predominantly highway use better.
