Two-Wheeler Insurance in India: Third-Party vs Comprehensive Cover and Common Add-ons

Compare third-party and own-damage cover, exclusions, add-ons and renewal checks.

Third-party insurance addresses covered liability to others; own-damage insurance addresses specified loss or damage to your motorcycle. A comprehensive or package policy combines relevant sections, but it still has exclusions and limits. Compare the actual policy schedule, deductibles and add-ons rather than interpreting “comprehensive” as a promise that every loss will be paid.

Separate liability, own damage and personal accident

IRDAI's motor-insurance guidance states that third-party liability cover is mandatory for vehicles used on public roads in India. It does not follow that this cover pays to repair your own bike after every accident. Liability and damage to your property are distinct insurance questions.

New India's standalone own-damage page describes damage cover for a vehicle already carrying valid third-party insurance. This arrangement demonstrates why a rider may hold separate sections or policies with different expiry dates. Standalone own damage is not a replacement for the required liability cover.

Personal-accident protection also deserves a separate check. Read the insured person, eligibility, benefits and exclusions rather than assuming the motorcycle's repair cover is medical insurance for everyone travelling on it. Passenger or other benefits depend on the actual wording and endorsements.

Before comparing prices, list which sections you already hold and when each ends. A long-term liability certificate does not automatically establish that own-damage cover remains active for the same period.

Compare the amount insured and the claim contribution

Insured declared value, or IDV, is important for specified total-loss or theft calculations under the policy. It is not a promise that every repair claim equals that amount or that an older bike receives its original purchase price. Check how the insurer establishes it and how the wording treats a total loss.

Deductibles are amounts the policy leaves with you under applicable terms. A larger voluntary deductible can reduce premium while increasing your contribution when an eligible claim occurs. Compare quotes with equivalent values and deductibles before calling one cheaper.

For a wholly hypothetical repair case, assume ₹12,000 of eligible damage and a ₹1,000 applicable deductible, with no other adjustment. The resulting insurer contribution would be ₹11,000. Actual claims may include depreciation, exclusions and other conditions; these figures are not a standard two-wheeler settlement formula.

Check whether accessories and modifications are declared and covered as required. Save the proposal and schedule, and correct registration, engine, chassis or ownership errors through the insurer's authorised process rather than assuming an online payment confirms every detail.

Buy add-ons for a defined gap

New India's two-wheeler customer information sheet lists options including nil depreciation, consumables, engine protection, return to invoice and roadside assistance. This is evidence of that insurer's documented options, not a promise that every product offers the same wording or eligibility.

Nil-depreciation cover changes eligible depreciation treatment under its conditions. It does not erase every deductible or make excluded mechanical failures payable. Check vehicle-age limits, claim-count restrictions and any parts or events outside the benefit.

Engine protection can address defined events under an add-on, but it is not a universal engine warranty. Return-to-invoice benefits apply under specified circumstances, rather than every repair. Roadside assistance also needs a territorial, service and usage-limit check.

Choose extras from your actual risk and access needs. A rider far from support may value assistance differently from someone with another valid assistance contract. Avoid paying twice for overlapping services, and keep confirmation of what is included in each product.

Prepare for claims and renew deliberately

Read the claim-notification process before an incident. Preserve relevant photographs, records and documents when safe, contact the insurer promptly, and follow requirements for inspection and repair authorisation. Police documentation may be needed for particular events such as theft; confirm the exact process rather than guessing a universal checklist.

Examine exclusions concerning use, licence conditions, wear and tear and other specified circumstances. A cashless network means a payment arrangement for an accepted claim, not automatic approval of every invoice. Ask which workshop can handle your actual vehicle and claim type.

At renewal, compare coverage periods, IDV, deductibles, claim history and add-ons again. Check no-claim-bonus eligibility and any required disclosures. Current premiums, statutory rules, product availability and individual eligibility need verification; no insurer ranking or current price is established by this guide.

Quick questions, clear answers

Does third-party cover pay for a stolen motorcycle?

It addresses covered liability to others, rather than providing the bike's theft protection by itself. Check an appropriate own-damage or package section for theft, including its conditions, documents and amount insured. Do not infer theft cover merely because you have a valid liability certificate.

Is zero depreciation the same as zero payment by me?

No. The add-on concerns specified depreciation deductions. Deductibles, excluded costs, limits and other conditions can still leave an amount payable by you. Compare the actual benefit wording and example settlement breakdown rather than treating the product name as an all-cost guarantee.

Can the two insurance sections expire separately?

They can have different coverage periods under the arrangement purchased. Check both the liability and own-damage dates in the documents, especially for bundled products. A reminder for one section should not be treated as proof that every other section remains valid.
